PRC Visa Types & Requirements (L / Q1-Q2 / S1-S2 / M / F)

This page restructures your original content for clarity, printing, and SEO. Chinese is default; switch above for English.

1) Tourist Visa (L)

Since January 2024, flight and hotel bookings are not required for L visa applications.

Note: Typical stay is 60 days; special cases may get up to 90 days.

2) Family (Q1/Q2) & Private Affairs (S1/S2)

Provide the following:

  1. Invitation letter from a person in China (attach PRC ID, color, both sides).
  2. For non‑Chinese inviters: copies of passport and residence permit.
  3. For ethnic‑Chinese families: A non‑Chinese spouse applying for Q2 with an invitation letter must also provide the marriage certificate and the ethnic‑Chinese spouse’s passport copy. If the spouse holds a PRC passport, also provide a copy of U.S. green card or other status document.

Invitation Letter — Sample Key Points

Inviter: Zhang San, M, DOB 1990‑01‑01, PRC ID No. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (or foreign passport / PRC Permanent Residence No.); Address in China; Phone; Email.

I invite my relative(s) to visit (short‑term) / reside (long‑term) in China, intending to enter on 2025‑XX‑XX and stay for XX days.

Invitee: LI, SI (exactly as in passport), F, DOB 2000‑02‑02, Nationality USA, Passport No. XXXXXXXX; Relationship: daughter / parent / grandparent / sibling / cousin, etc.

(If multiple invitees, list each one. Each applicant must include a separate invitation letter and color copies of the inviter’s PRC ID (both sides).)

I certify the above information is true and accept responsibility for inaccuracies.

Signature: __________ Date: __________ (signature required)
Attach: inviter’s PRC ID (both sides) in color; for non‑PRC inviters, attach passport and residence permit.

After signing, scan the letter and ID copies, email them to us, and print in color for submission.

3) Business (M) & Visit/Exchange (F)

Note: M is often issued for up to 10 years; F is commonly 1‑year multiple‑entry currently.

Definitions: M covers commercial/trade activities; F covers non‑profit exchanges (conferences, academic, cultural/sports, visits).

Provide one of the following:

  1. “Authorized Unit” Invitation Letter or Invitation Confirmation issued by a designated unit; or
  2. Invitation letter from a local government / company / institution (non‑authorized units).

If issued by a non‑authorized unit, include:

  1. Invitee details: Name, sex, DOB, passport No.
  2. Visit details: purpose, entry/exit dates, places to visit, relationship with inviter, who pays.
  3. Inviting entity: name, phone, address, official stamp, legal representative’s signature & date.
  4. Use letterhead (or self‑made) listing Chinese address, phone, email, and website (if any).

Drafting tip: bullet the required items; sign and scan → email → print in color (signature is mandatory).

4) Proof of Kinship (Q1 / S1 / S2)

When applying for Q1/S1 (settlement) or S2 (short‑term private affairs) based on kinship, provide direct kinship evidence (spouse, parents, children, children’s spouses, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and spouse’s parents).

Common proofs: marriage certificate, birth certificate, police‑issued kinship letter, notarized kinship certificate, etc. If no single direct proof, combine multiple documents and third‑party attestations.

Note: Regular short‑term family visits generally do not require kinship proof. Non‑kinship S1/S2 cases also do not require it. For child guardianship (Q1), see Chinese Children’s Travel Document.

7) FAQ

Hotel bookings can be changed after visa issuance?

Yes. Travel plans, including hotels, can be adjusted after you receive the visa.

Must the inviter be my parents?

No. Relatives such as siblings and cousins are acceptable.

Can both parents be inviters?

Yes, but it’s unnecessary. If two inviters sign, both must sign and provide their IDs.

Inviter’s ID address differs from current residence — is it an issue?

Generally no.

I hold a PRC ID — may I invite my U.S.-born child?

Except for rare special cases, usually no.

Parents visiting the U.S. can issue an invitation letter?

Possible but not recommended. A mainland phone number is needed; consulates may verify by phone.

May my parents invite my U.S. friend to China for tourism?

In principle, your friend should provide their own flight/hotel. Such personal invitations might pass but are not recommended due to stricter scrutiny.
